Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, No Medals Today is such a book. The Yom Kippur War of 1973 so-called because it began on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), the holiest day of prayer and fasting in the Jewish calendar. The Yom Kippur War is also known as the October War. It began with a surprise Arab attack on Israel on Saturday 6th October 1973. On that day, Egyptian and Syrian military forces launched an attack knowing that the Israeli military would be partaking in the religious celebrations associated with Yom Kippur. Consequently, their security would be temporarily undermined. Despite the initial successes of the Egyptian and Syrian forces, the war proved how effective the Israeli military could be. After the initial set-backs, the war served as a huge morale boost to Israelis. Despite a co-ordinated attack on two fronts, Israel had survived and had pushed back the nations that had initially broken through Israel’s defenses.
Much has been written about the Yom Kippur War, but the author brings an enlivening and refreshing view point to the table with this story. The book description itself says it all: ‘Yiftach Cohen is a junior diplomat at the Israeli Embassy in Paris. He spends his days dealing with mundane problems and juggling his boring job, his ordinary family life, and his French lover, Chantal. Until one day, everything changes.

This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. There are attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a gripping journey.
It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. And that’s exactly what I did! I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!
I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Shlomi Tal in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. Five stars from me.

No Medals Today Shlomi Tal Books Reviews
In No Medals Today, Yiftach Cohen, a junior diplomat for the Israeli Embassy in Paris thinks his life is pretty boring. His family life is ordinary, his job is boring,… But then, everything changes when the Yom Kippur war breaks out in October 1973. Yiftach becomes a central digure in an international network of smuggling and fraud, and becomes responsibile to provide the Israeli Defense Force with the means to survive… and to win a war. Now, this underground trafficking relies mostly on one thing his ability to make the French authorities look the other way.
I loved the international aspect of the book as it combined French customs and Yiftach’s dealings with the French authorities with the situation in his homeland, Israel. The Yom Kippur war I had heard of, of course, but I don’t think I’ve ever read a book focused on this time period. The characters were well-written and easy to relate to, in particular Yiftach.
The author did a solid job on the history aspect of the book, and on portraying the characters as rounded and three-dimensional. The tension was high from the start of the book, and I had to stop myself from biting my nails as the suspense got even higher toward the end. For fans of historical thrillers and spy novels. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Yiftach Cohen finds himself in the position of being a minor diplomat at the embassy in Paris when the Yom Kippur war breaks out. Whereas he previously had a manageable job that gave him time to pay attention to his wife and children, as well as his girlfriend, Chantal, now he is managing more as a smuggler than a diplomat, but he resigns himself to this very different role in the war from his previous army position on the front lines.
While I really enjoyed the different perspective of a soldier who isn’t allowed to soldier the only way he knows, I felt like the story was really slow and the level of detail provided on schedules and shipments supporting the smuggling activities was borderline excruciating at times. My favorite character ended up being Emi, Yiftach’s partner at the embassy, largely because his main job was to point out how shallow Yiftach’s character was. I also thought the first person, present tense, narrative was awkward, and that added to the monotony of some of the details. However, I’m not gonna lie, I was pretty happy with the very last chapter - you’ll have to read it to find out why.
Good book! A mix of history, fiction, action and romance. Offers insight into the will and determination of the Israeli people to survive.
I loved this book. I didn't think I would like it very much as it's very different in content from everything else I read. The story moves very swiftly and it rarely has any down time, mirroring the lives of the main characters in the book. As the reader I became very involved in the events of the war, following every twist and turn of the requests being made of Yiftach Cohen and his fellow co-workers. It also had me wanting to know the answers to Emi's question to Yiftach about his relationship and love for his wife for his lover . Knowing that not only was the war being fought with soldiers and weapons, but with intellect, and civilians of all kinds, made the reading much more personal for me. Daily lives were completely changed for some, while for others right next to them, life went on as usual. I loved the ending, I was not expecting it. Glad I took the time to read this.
No Medals Today was hard to put down! It was fascinating to read the story of Yiftach Cohen navigating complex political and personal situations during the Yom Kippur war.
I found it interesting as to how the Israelis had to connive to get war supplies but it was boring reading. The author did throw some sex, suspense and intrigue in just to break up the monotony.
