Liam Stone operates within a band of emotion that never touches his self imposed safety limits; no severe pain, yet no great joy. The death of his widowed Mother in an automobile accident and a meeting with his Father’s best friend, a Catholic priest, convince him that he is aware of only a small portion of who his parents truly were. He learns of the existence of a group of ledgers that his Father had hidden. He finds the ledgers, but can’t read # eleven. A severe case of tinnitus stops him every time he touches the book. Each bout with the ledger loosens images of people and events from the 19th and early 20th century, including his Father as a young man. He starts to remember names and stories that no one had ever told him. His memories go back three generations to an 1850 North Atlantic crossing from New Ross to New Orleans. He stops work on his second book of poetry and writes a novel formed from these images. After the novel's publication, Liam has a shocking revelation.

I lost touch with Kennedy after having read the Albany Trilogy and all of his other fiction. I'd say I consumed his writings feverishly, then suddenly nothing was left. I would check occasionally, but Kennedy seemed to disappear. I moved to other writers and time elapsed. I'm not going to offer a book report. I've hated the whole idea of book reports after suffering through them in high school. Book reports stripped any enjoyment of simply reading.I will easily recommend "The Singing Bone" for a resumption of a virtual friendship with Kennedy after so many years without him.
Additionally, if you're Irish and Catholic, or just Catholic, it may touch a long-simmering emotion and/or criticism on ethnicity and religion. It will not disappoint!

The Singing Bone grabbed me from the first page. The characters are rich and engaging and the various relationships are dynamic. Check this book out... you'll love it!
I love historical novels as well as page turning mysteries. The Singing Bone hit the mark in both areas. It covered four generations with the first immigrating from Ireland and facing prejudice in the midwest. The author, William Kennedy, captured the trials of each of the generations, with a little Catholic guilt thrown in. As the story unfolds there is enough mystery and turns of events to keep the reader engaged...right up to the last page.
This book was one I couldn't put down once I started it. The characters were all so believable. When I was finished reading I wanted to know more about them especially Liam. This is a good bookclub read. Diane Jolin

Our book club recently read The Singing Bone by William E. Kennedy. A few of the club members knew Bill and his wife from involvement in a local reading council and had invited them to join our group to discuss the book. Not only was the book an excellent read, but having Bill and his wife discuss it with us made it even more interesting and enjoyable. From beginning to end the book kept my interest with its intriguing unfolding of four generations of "blood memories". I would highly recommend the book and suggest other book clubs consider inviting authors when feasible. Crystal Moser
